For Track of The Week I thought I’d go for something completely different to what people would expect of me and pick a summery Rock/Ska/Reggae track. Ordinarily, Prog and Metal are more my thing, so check me spreading my branches – it’s only the Dusty Cuts with Get Down!

Now I’m not known for my love of Ska, Reggae or DJ scratching but these guys mash all three together perfectly on this fine number. It reminds me of days sat on the beach listening to bands like Sublime. It’s a slice of aural summer if ever there was one, it’s well worth checking out even if it’s not normally your cup of tea. It certainly caught me by surprise!

Listen to Get Down here www.myspace.com/dustycuts

Also, Dusty Cuts are in the process of recording their first full Length album to follow on from their debut EP “Enter The Boombox”. It’s due out early next year, so keep your ears peeled, ladies and gents!

It’s that time of the week again to let you know what you could be getting up to! Here’s my picks of the week.

Boscombe Community Fair – it starts on Friday and will be going on all weekend. Just like every year it’ll feature an excellent mix of local bands and that friendly community atmosphere it’s know for. Plus it’s the 15th Anniversary this time around. For all the info and stage times of more than fifty bands, check out our article here.

On Friday night, we’ve also got the new regular event in Bournemouth - Redeemer! It’s a club night in association with Rock & Metal establishments Metal Hammer and Scuzz! It’s got the excellent Rage Against The Machine tribute Enraged supported by From Ruin and is looking to be a good ‘un for those wanting something different to the usual Thursday and Saturday at Sound Circus. See the Facebook event page here.

My last (and by no means least) pick is on on Saturday. It’s the Oxjam Fundraiser at Champions with local fancy dress heroes Disco’s Out (Murder’s In), Rapids! (Who have recently been signed to london based Heist or Hit Records) and also the excellent Nion Abeo. It’s for charity and it’s got some excellent bands, what more could you want? Facebook event page here.

For more gigs this week see below (and for gigs beyond that, hit up the full Gig Guide – Ed).
The newly appointed lead singer of Thin Lizzy, former frontman with The Almighty and singer/songwriter Ricky Warwick has announced the dates for his forthcoming “Ricky Feckin Warwick” tour which includes an acoustic date at Champions in Bournemouth.

Above: The Almighty – Wild & Wonderful

Ricky’s on his solo tour to promote his new double A side single – The Whiskey Song featuring Nathan Connolly (Snow Patrol) and The Star of The County Down (featuring Izhar Ashdot).

Ricky first came to fame in the Heavy Metal band The Almighty along with stints in Circus Diablo (with Billy Duffy of The Cult) and also post punk rockers New Model Army. The UK tour will take place immediately prior to rehearsals commencing with Thin Lizzy later this year, with a tour in 2011 that includes a date at Southampton Guildhall on the 18th January.

Above: Ricky Warwick – Belfast Confetti

Ricky Warwick has released three impressive solo albums Tattoos & Alibis (2003), Love Many Trust Few (2005) and last years the highly acclaimed Belfast Confetti which gave a nod to his hometown of Belfast where he grew up. His live show comprises of a complete mix of material all throughout his career including a few well chosen covers along with plenty of banter and story telling. I was lucky enough to see Ricky on tour last year in Portsmouth where he supported fellow Northern Irish rockers Therapy? on their Crooked Timber tour and I can guarantee that those at the Bournemouth gig are certainly in for a treat and will thoroughly enjoy his show.

Champions venue has undergone some serious changes since I was last there and all are for the best! The corner stage and the table between the pillars have gone, only to be replaced with a brand new stage at the rear of the venue. This gives more room for punters to see the bands and the bands an easier time for setting up their instruments, as the stage is right next to the dressing room. New sound and lighting system is in effect and with a few minor tweaks will kick ass! This is a major display of intent from the venue to be taken seriously as a genuine contender on the Dorset live music scene. With some major names lined up to play, I can only see this place going from strength to strength.

The initial test of the new layout scheme is the first all-day Metal event in Bournemouth: WRECKFEST promoted by Wreckless Intent. Food was available throughout the proceedings with competitions and giveaways too! Sadly I was unable to attend the whole day and will review only the bands I saw in the evening.

Above: Desert Storm

The occasion concentrated mainly on the wealth of local talent around Poole and Bournemouth. The event kicked off at 1.30pm with Brainsaw followed by Numpty Wizard (I love that band name), Nepalese Temple Ball, the excellent Chaosbomb, Macarga, and then Al B Damned. I joined the proceedings on the tail end of Desert Storm’s pounding set of rifftastic Stoner Metal anthems.

Above: Maniacal edge

Above: Snub

Afterward were Maniacal Edge, sans keyboard player and the final show for guitarist D who is bowing out to pursue alternative engagements. It doesn’t effect the performance as they rip into their set like a freshly turned zombie demolishing a warm human throat! Melodic Death Metal with balls! Hardcore heroes Snub, get stuck in next with brutal bone-crunching riffs and vocals, delivered with the ferocity of baseball bat to the back of the cranium. Local Metalhead Andrew ‘Meths’ Wiltshire adds to the drunken fun with intense screaming and shedding of clothes (you had to be there).

Above: Divine Chaos

I watched Divine Chaos win last years Metal to the Masses competition and grab a spot on the Bloodstock Unsigned Stage. Since then relentless touring and supporting major acts like Vader have honed them into an accomplished live force. Blasting out modern Thrash Metal with neck-shattering savagery, they look and sound like a band to be reckoned with.

Above: Deadseed

Bournemouth is no stranger to singer Pat Deadseed as he fronts the UK’s best Pantera tribute band 101% Pantera. Dead Seed is his other band and Metal covers is the name of the game. Champions was treated to an onslaught of tunes from across the board, I won’t list all the song titles and artists but some of the bands covered were: Sepultura, Lamb Of God, Black Sabbath, Machine Head, Metallica, Clutch and of course, the band that got the biggest crowd response Pantera. They sounded really tight and were having as much fun as the crowd. Great show!

Above: Bear of Maniacal Edge/Champions Venue

Attendance for the first WRECKFEST was below expectations whilst I was present but it was the first one and had a steady trickle of punters coming and going throughout the day. All in all everyone had a blast and that was the main thing. Congratulations to Bear and Champions for having the vision and daring to do what no other Bournemouth venue or promoter has done (to my knowledge) – an all-day event, geared toward a specific genre. I’m well looking forward to WRECKFEST II.

Bang that head that doesn’t bang.

It’s that time of year again, the festival season is almost over and you’re all packing your tents and sleeping bags away ready for next year. You either have memories of mud slides or of sunburn, but you know you’ve had a good time. So what’s next? What do you do to keep the musical fire that burns in all of us alight? Well you go to a fair of course! It just so happens that from 10th-12th September Boscombe Community Fair is back in town with a packed line up to suit and to stoke everyone’s musical fire.

It’s a big milestone as they celebrate their 15th year, so a big congratulations all round to all of the organisers and volunteers who have made Boscombe Community Fair happen every year. The big milestone of 15 years is also reflected in quality of the line up. Headlining the event Friday Night are 8 piece ska funksters King Porter Stomp. Saturday Night sees cyber punk quartet Subsource and dub, reggae renegades Dreadzone Soundsystem take the stage. Finally Sunday sees local legends Pronghorn close the fair with their own special blend of punk and bluegrass.

Even after taking all of the headliners into account, you cast your eyes over the line up quickly and the best of Dorset’s music scene are all there. You’ve got Fearne, The Neon Tigers, The Longest Day, Disco’s Out, Murder’s In and intriguingly the possibility of a very special guest. This really is the place to be if you love live music and a great place to be to support local music and arts.

You may remember a while back there was also a battle of the bands, which took place at The Portman that members of the DRO crew judged, with the grand prize being a top slot at the fair. So a special mention goes out to the two respective winners The Blues Machine who you can see on Stage Two after Fearne’s set and Looking Through Glass who take their place in the line up just before The Longest Day on the Sunday night on Stage Two.

Boscombe Community Fair not only brings you top class entertainment in the form of two packed stages of live music (and a reasonably priced bar) but they are here to support the local community. The fair is completely run by volunteers from the community for the community. In their own words “The weekend helps to give some much needed exposure for local artists and community groups whilst also aiming to provide the best possible weekend of entertainment at the lowest possible cost for the local community.”

Recent rock ‘n’ roll news from our fair county.

Local Classic Hard Rockers Voodoo Vegas unleashed their music video for So Unkind back in November ‘09. We were lucky enough to have the exclusive on this and since that time it’s impressively exceeded 5000 plays on YouTube! The video’s below.

Rapids! were a highlight of our 1st Birthday Bash for many of the 200+ present. The band has recently announced that they’ll be performing a live session at The Hub (it’s next to the BBC 6Music studio) on Fri Sep 10th. The guys will be on at 7:40pm on Tom Robinsons show. “Playing 3 songs LIVE on BBC 6Music. None of this pre-recorded rubbish!”

Random gig pic: The face paints came out at VDub at the Pub on Sunday.

Speaking of our events, last week I announced our next event was to be held at Mr. Kyps on 30th September. Unfortunately we’ve had to postpone the event until early next year. We’re in the process of booking our next event which will be our Christmas Party!

Well after a crazy bank holiday weekend, the volume Dorset gigs seem to have calmed down a bit. Needless to say there are still some excellent gigs coming up this week!

My picks of the bunch would be:

The Dorset Steam Fair with it’s superb balance of local bands. Sing along to your hearts content cover bands and an extensive selection of beers, ales and other tipples for the discerning customer. It’s gonna be an epic one and it starts tonight and goes on for the next 5 days! See their page for more details.

It’s Mr Kyps 50th birthday bash this Thursday and they’ve got the best Queen tribute this writer has seen. The Great Pretender will be giving it their all. This is one for those that love Freddie Mercury and Co! No doubt, knowing the Kyps crew like we do, they’ll be some surprises involved throughout the night! Information about the gig here.

Firebird are playing at Champions on Friday night. With support from Godsized and Nepalese Temple Ball. It’s gonna be a brilliant mixture of blues rock, stoner rock and post/progressive metal across the bands! I know I’m definitely gonna be there for this one – don’t miss it! Facebook event page here.
