The Quireboys + Voodoo Vegas Live 09.12.09 – Reader Review

The Quireboys

The Quireboys

Below is our first reader submitted article. This live review was submitted by Deanna Hanley from Bournemouth.

Even before the doors were opened a large queue formed outside Mr. Kyps. All eager to get inside, out of the freezing cold, to listen to the amazing Voodoo Vegas followed by the classic Quireboys.

Kicking off the show with Road Runner, Voodoo Vegas, fresh from their European tour burst on to the stage full of enthusiasm. Lead singer Lawrence Case engaged the crowd, getting them involved by extending the mic into the audience. For the first time in the UK, Voodoo Vegas played a song so new, it’s currently nameless. Even so, the majority of the crowd still tried to join in during the chorus.  Paul Williams, seemingly crammed behind a drum kit in front of the Quire Boys’ kit  was still able to offer over-exaggerated movements. Bassist Ash Molton only stopped head bagging between songs and in order to sip his beer. Both guitarists Nick Brown and Meryl Hamilton consistently played to a amazingly high standard, had awesome stage presence and when their turn came, played face melting solos!

Still going strong after twenty years The Quireboys entered the stage with a roar from the crowd. The front of Mr.Kyps dramatically filled with fans full of energy. Lead singer Spike sang perfectly, with the mic spending most of the concert in the air. The unpretentious style of Guy Griffin (guitarist) blew me away. Also playing guitar, Paul Guerin, without difficulty moved swiftly from one end of the fret board to the other. Equally playing a big part during the show giving their songs more of a classic rock sound was the fab keyboard player and bassist. The heart pounding drum beat coming from Phil Martini joined with the rest of the band, creating a buzzing atmosphere! All band members must have felt that love coming from the crowd because they invited everyone onto the stage during their last song Sex Party. The stage filled with enthusiastic fans dancing and trying to get close to the band. Even though the band is considerably older than myself, they all put on one crazy, solid and tight show.
