Track Of The Week: Rapids! – The Elitist

Rapids!

The Elitist is an atmospheric, multi-layered, indie-rock triumph. Rapids! are another band stepping beyond the call of duty and creating something of a standard so high that they deserve a title better than ‘local band’. The Bloc Party and Foals references are easy to make but the darker undertone of Steve DaCosta’s heavy guitar sound and James Davies’ lightning punk rock drumming are just two of the things that take the band beyond these comparisons and into something of their own entirely.

I asked singer Matt Holliday about the track.

“Musically, it’s probably my favourite Rapids! track that we have written to date. I knew when writing the lyrics to this one, that it had to capture a very particular atmosphere. I think that opening piece of music is really entrancing and captures your interest. It has this sort of haunting quality to it as well, it’s kind of beautiful, but slightly sinister at the same time, and that’s what I love about it. I think that’s why it feels like a very natural opener to our live set.”
