Local Band Campaign to Help People with Asperger Syndrome and Autism.
“Brothers Grimmer, a Bournemouth band is planning to raise thousands of pounds for The National Autistic Society (NAS), the UK’s leading charity for people affected by autism, with the release of their new track.
Brothers Grimmers’ album launch party is set for the 12th March at Champions in Bournemouth, with all ticket profits going to the NAS. But this is just the beginning of a much larger fund raising plan and campaign to raise awareness.
Brothers Grimmer have been playing together since 2001 and are well known on the Bournemouth music scene, made up of brothers Lee Cleary, Matt Cleary and Michael Bundell and friends Steven Hewitt and Shawn Wadham. The band will be donating all the proceeds from the release of ‘Who I am’ to the NAS, following this up with a search for Celebrity support to raise as much money as possible on a UK wide scale. The band chose to support the NAS because of seeing the impact having Asperger syndrome, a form of autism, has had on the band’s backing vocalist and dancer, Michael.
Michael’s brother and drummer Matt said: “There’s so much misunderstanding about autism and Asperger syndrome and this hasn’t been fully addressed in schools yet. Lots of people have no idea how common it is or how challenging it can be. Unfortunately this leaves many parents without the appropriate support simply because of a lack of knowledge and awareness .
” Michael has struggled with his condition and there wasn’t always help available to us as a family when he was younger. Luckily my mum was determined to get him the support he needed to tap into his talents and skills and enable him to move towards his goals . If we had known about the help available from the NAS it would have been much easier for mum.”
“As a band, we wanted to do something to help the NAS and raise awareness of what the charity does, so people effected by autistic spectrum disorders like Asperger syndrome, can get the crucial support they need. Michael wasn’t diagnosed until he was 12. Mum was inspired by a story she stumbled across on GMTV, which led her to push to get a proper diagnosis . I hope our campaign will have the same effect. Using our musical talents seemed like the obvious route to help raise awareness, especially as it is an example of what Michael as our dancer has been able to achieve despite the challenges he faces .”
Alison Shersby, NAS Head of Community Fundraising, said: said: “Autism is a serious, lifelong and disabling condition that affects around one in one hundred people in the UK. Thanks to our fantastic supporters, who continue to find amazing ways to fundraise, the NAS is able to provide valuable support and services to people with autism, their families and carers. We’d like to say a big thank you to Brothers Grimmer for supporting us.”
‘Who I am’ is available to buy from www.myspace.com/brothersgrimmer from 12th March and tickets for the first NAS fund raising event and Album launch are available at www.ticketweb.co.uk xx.”
