Well after a crazy bank holiday weekend, the volume Dorset gigs seem to have calmed down a bit. Needless to say there are still some excellent gigs coming up this week!

New Model Army + New York Alcoholic Anxiety Attack @ Mr Kyps

NMAreview

New Model Army + New York Alcoholic Anxiety Attack @ Mr Kyps, Poole 20th August 2010.

In 1989 when Mr Kyps was still just an old snooker hall, New Model Army in their stripped down form of Red Sky Coven arrived in Poole to play in a pub a hundred metres away from Mr Kyps called the Bricklayers Arms. This was a very special event in the September just after New Model Army had played their triumphant set at the Reading Festival.

Fast forward 21 years and Mr Kyps promoter (and huge NMA fan) Bert Bernell has been working on bringing the band to Poole for a long time. Tonight is the night and Bert seems very excited for them to finally be here. This is an intimate show with the venue packed to the rafters, it is going to be a good night and all the ingredients are in place.

The Jasper Stephens Memorial Gig

JasperGallery

On Sunday 15th August Mr Kyps was bustling as people gathered to pay their respects to their late friend Jasper Stephens. The evening’s entertainment was courtesy of 15 local bands and artists including Voodoo Vegas, Western Sand, Si Genaro, Club Le Shark and The Sabres. The result was an astonishing set of rock covers performed by these musicians in various combinations. You can find out more about the night’s set list, full line up and details in our Preview here.

New Model Army To Play Mr Kyps

NMAheader

New Model Army arrive for their first visit to Mr Kyps in Poole this Friday night (20th August 2010). The gig has been slotted as an intimate warm-up show just before the band’s appearance at The Levellers ‘Beautiful Days’ Festival at Escot Park in Devon. New Model Army celebrate their 30th Anniversary this year, which is some major achievement as they have played on many worldwide tours and produced eleven top quality studio albums during that time. Earlier this year they finished a ninety date tour of Europe and America in support of their album Today is a Good Day which critics rated as some of their best work since the infamous Thunder and Consolation.

Local Rawkers Unite

Jasper

On Sunday 15th August a community will gather to pay their respects to a much loved friend in the best way they know how – Rock ‘n’ Roll. Mr. Kyps will play host to a very special gig for one Jasper Stephens, who very sadly passed away earlier this year. Jasper had many friends in the local Rock (or as he would call it RAWK) scene and played a very active part, including running the Voodoo Vegas Facebook fan page.

More than eleven local bands will take to the stage in various combinations (think of the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert) to perform some of Jasper’s favourite tracks, including songs from Aerosmith, Metallica, Queen, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Dio, Audioslave and Guns ‘n’ Roses.

We write reviews, previews, articles and share our thoughts here at Dorset Rock Online, but sometimes it’s nice to just look at the pictures. Here’s Fearne performing at Mr Kyps in Poole at their EP release on Friday 11th June 2010. We weren’t able to get a review of the show but photographer Robert Whetton was able to capture the night on (digital) film. Legend. If you were at the gig, please let us all know what you thought in the comments below. All photography © Robert Whetton - www.rjwhetton.co.uk.

The Fearne EP Release

FearnePreview

Fearne are amongst Dorset’s most popular and accessible bands. Aside from a hectic touring schedule, the band have been generally been keeping a low profile whilst recording their brand new EP. The self titled, six track release has so far been held close to the band’s chest but all will be revealed as the CD is unleashed this Friday at Mr Kyps. This will be Fearne’s first local gig in some time and support on the night comes in the shape of Nion Abeo and Wildfire.
